Mario Lefebvre: Applied Probability and Statistics

Applied Probability and Statistics

Description

This book moves systematically through the topic of applied probability from an introductory chapter to such topics as random variables and vectors, stochastic processes, estimation, testing and regression. The topics are well chosen and the presentation is enriched by many examples from real life. Each chapter concludes with many original, solved and unsolved problems and hundreds of multiple choice questions, enabling those unfamiliar with the topics to master them. Additionally appealing are historical notes on the mathematicians mentioned throughout, and a useful bibliography. A distinguishing character of the book is its thorough and succinct handling of the varied topics.

Seventeen-year-old Vane Weston has no idea how he survived the category five tornado that killed his parents. And he has no idea if the beautiful, dark-haired girl who s swept through his dreams every night since the Kanban and Scrum - Making the Most of Both download ebook storm is real. But he hopes she is. Spark Joy is an in-depth, line illustrated, room-by-room guide to decluttering and organising your home, from bedrooms and kitchens to bathrooms and living rooms as well as a wide range of items in different categories, including clothes, photographs, paperwork, books, cutlery, cosmetics, shoes, bags, wallets and valuables. Charming line drawings explain how to properly organise drawers, wardrobes, cupboards and cabinets. The illustrations also show Ms Kondo's unique folding method, clearly showing how to fold anything from shirts, trousers and jackets to skirts, socks and bras. The secret to Marie Kondo's unique and simple KonMari tidying method is to focus on what you want to keep, not what you want to get rid of. Ask yourself if something 'sparks joy' and suddenly it becomes so much easier to understand if you really need it in your home and your life. When you surround yourself with things you love you will find that your whole life begins to change. Marie Kondo's first book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying, presents her unique tidying philosophy and introduces readers to the basics of her KonMari method.

Kanban and Scrum - Making the Most of Both

Description

Scrum and Kanban are two flavours of Agile software development - two deceptively simple but surprisingly powerful approaches to software development. So how do they relate to each other? The purpose of this book is to clear up the fog, so you can figure out how Kanban and Scrum might be useful in your environment. Part I illustrates the similarities and differences between Kanban and Scrum, comparing for understanding, not for judgement. There is no such thing as a good or bad tool - just good or bad decisions about when and how to use which tool. This book includes: - Kanban and Scrum in a nutshell - Comparison of Kanban and Scrum and other Agile methods - Practical examples and pitfalls - Cartoons and diagrams illustrating day-to-day work - Detailed case study of a Kanban implementation within a Scrum organization Part II is a case study illustrating how a Scrum-based development organization implemented Kanban in their operations and support teams.

Smith: A Place to Call Home

A Place to Call Home

Description

Deborah Smith's is one of the most imaginative and appealing new voices in Southern fiction. In the tradition of "Fried Green Tomatoes, " the nationally bestselling author offers a deliciously original new novel that will make you laugh one moment and then move you to tears--an irresistible Southern saga that chronicles a love as innocent as a child's and as powerful as that of two star-crossed lovers can be. "I planned to be the kind of old Southern lady who talks to her tomato plants and buys sweaters for her cats. I'd be deliberately peculiar. I'd wear bright red lipstick and tell embarrassing true stories about my family, and people would say, "I heard she was always a little funny, if you know what I mean." They wouldn't understand why, and I didn't intend to tell them." At thirty, Claire Maloney knows her life has become a major-league wreck. And she knows why it all started falling apart, too. Because Roan Sullivan was banished from Dunderry, Georgia, twenty years ago, and Claire hasn't heard from him since. She was only ten then, and Roan fifteen, but what happened to the two of them is the stuff of local legend, as vivid and dramatic as anything can be in a small town where people hoard sad stories as carefully as their great-grandmother's china. Back then, Roan Sullivan lived in a trailer amid junked cars and rusted tin cans, while Claire was the willful, pampered young daughter of the town's most respected family. So no one--least of all her parents--understood the bond that tied her to the fierce, motherless boy who had to fight every day for his place in the world. But Roan and Claire didn't choose one another; they belonged together, as involuntarily andpermanently as the soil and the seed from which the foxgloves grew on the side of Dunshinnog Mountain. They were simply a part of the place, and a part of each other. Until the dark afternoon when violence and terror overtook them, and Roan disappeared from Claire's life. Now, twenty years later, Claire is adrift, and the Maloneys are still hoping the past can be buried forever under the rich Southern earth. But Roan Sullivan is about to walk back into their lives. By turns tender and sexy and heartbreaking and exuberant, "A Place to Call Home" is an unforgettable journey between two hearts. It is a book to read, and reread, and cherish. "A Place to Call Home" has the magic of great storytelling."An engrossing read with thoroughly engaging characters. The reader's sense is that these two could only belong to one another, and no one else. I also loved the rich detail of family life, especially the uniquely Southern aspects." --Eileen Goudge "These characters leap off the pages. A moving story that holds you to the end and has all warmth and tenderness of LaVyrle Spencer at her best." --Iris Johansen, author of the bestselling novel "The Ugly Duckling" "Laughter, wonderment, unrequited love! Meddling old biddies, warring families, lovers reunited. What more could you want?" --Rita Mae Brown "Clear the decks when you read this book because you're not going to be able to put it aside until you finished the last delicious page." --Janet Evanovich An Alternate Selection of The Literary Guild

The Sinking of the Prince of Wales & Repulse: The End of a Battleship Era?

Description

On the third day of the war with Japan, two Royal Navy capital ships were sunk off Malaya by air torpedo attack. They had not requested the air support that could have saved them and 840 men died in the battleship HMS Prince of Wales and the battle cruiser HMS Repulse. The authors re-create for the reader not only what happened, but also what it was like for the men involved. They dispose of several myths to explain the events of those confused hours, and address the uncertainty, controversy and strong emotions that surrounded the militarily disastrous sinkings.

The Brother Gardeners: Botany, Empire and the Birth of an Obession

Description

Bringing to life the science and adventure of eighteenth-century plant collecting, The Brother Gardeners is the story of how six men created the modern garden and changed the horticultural world in the process. It is a story of a garden revolution that began in America. In 1733, colonial farmer John Bartram shipped two boxes of precious American plants and seeds to Peter Collinson in London. Around these men formed the nucleus of a botany movement, which included famous Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus; Philip Miller, bestselling author of "The Gardeners Dictionary"; and Joseph Banks and David Solander, two botanist explorers, who scoured the globe for plant life aboard Captain Cook's Endeavor. As they cultivated exotic blooms from around the world, they helped make Britain an epicenter of horticultural and botanical expertise. "The Brother Gardeners" paints a vivid portrait of an emerging world of knowledge and gardening as we know it today.

Everyman's Rules for Scientific Living

Description

It is 1934, the Great War is long over and the next is yet to come. Amid billowing clouds of dust and information, the government 'Better Farming Train' slides through the wheat fields and small towns of Australia, bringing expert advice to those living on the land. The train is on a crusade to persuade the country that science is the key to successful farming, and that productivity is patriotic. In the swaying cars an unlikely love affair occurs between Robert Pettergree, a man with an unusual taste for soil, and Jean Finnegan, a talented young seamstress with a hunger for knowledge. In an atmosphere of heady scientific idealism, they marry and settle in the impoverished Mallee with the ambition of proving that a scientific approach to cultivation can transform the land. But after seasons of failing crops, and with a new World War looming, Robert and Jean are forced to confront each other, the community they have inadvertently destroyed, and the impact of their actions on an ancient and fragile landscape. Shot through with humour and a quiet wisdom, this haunting first novel vividly captures the hope and the disappointment of the era when it was possible to believe in the perfectibility of both nature and humankind. 'Beautifully written ...kindly, sometimes hilarious and ultimately very sad' Times Literary Supplement 'A peach of a first novel by a writer with a deep understanding of relationships and the outside pressures that wear away the good soil' Sunday Times

Junk DNA: A Journey Through the Dark Matter of the Genome

Description

For decades, 98 per cent of our DNA was written off as 'junk' on the grounds that it did not code for proteins. From rare genetic diseases to Down's Syndrome, from viral infections to the ageing process, only now are the effects and the vital functions of these junk regions beginning to emerge. Scientists' rapidly growing knowledge of this often controversial field has already provided a successful cure for blindness and saved innocent people from death row via DNA fingerprinting, and looks set to revolutionise treatment for many medical conditions including obesity. From Nessa Carey, author of the acclaimed The Epigenetics Revolution, this is the first book for a general readership on a subject that may underpin the secrets of human complexity - even the very origins of life on earth.

London Orbital is Iain Sinclair's voyage of discovery into the unloved outskirts of the city. On Fire: A Teen Wolf Novel

Description

"DREAMS CAN COME TRUE." "JUST NOT THE GOOD ONES." In Beacon Hills, a mountain lion is blamed for a spate of vicious attacks; Scott McCall wishes the cause was that simple. Unfortunately, hiding his werewolf identity, especially from Allison Argent, while fighting his need to shift, is only one problem. Keeping his mysterious, murderous Alpha off his back (literally), avoiding hunters, deciphering strange dreams about flames and impending doom . . . is really eating into lacrosse practice and hang-out time. So when Jackson Whittemore doesn t show for his date with Lydia, Scott hopes that helping Allison track down their buddy will be simpler. Derek whose hunger for vengeance blinds him to the dangers that lie in wait and Stiles are also looking, but the worried teens search is leading right to the preserve from Scott s nightmare. They aren t the only ones in the woods, and their little trip starts looking less like a rescue mission and more like an elaborate trap one that will force them to make the choice between killing and being killed. . . ."

Iain Banks: Canal Dreams

Canal Dreams

Description

Hisako Onoda, world famous cellist, refuses to fly. And so she travels to Europe as a passenger on a tanker bound through the Panama Canal. But Panama is a country whose politics are as volatile as the local freedom fighters. When Hisako's ship is captured, it is not long before the atmosphere is as flammable as an oxy-acetylene torch, and the tension as sharp as the spike on her cello...CANAL DREAMS is a novel of deceptive simplicity and dark, original power: stark psychological insights mesh with vividly realised scenarios in an ominous projection of global realpolitik. The result is yet another major landmark in the quite remarkable career of an outstanding modern novelist.

TV host and journalist Maria Menounos was once more than forty pounds overweight, low on energy, and often sick. Desperate for a change, she tried a wide array of diet and exercise fads--with zero success. Like most EveryGirl out there, Maria lacked the time, money, energy, and willpower to get in shape. "This work goes Canal Dreams free download pdf far beyond its publicity hook, which is that Eisner award winning Brazilian twin brothers ("Casanova, Daytripper") have adapted Milton Hatoum s classic novel about twin brothers to the graphic novel form. Narrated mostly by Nael, the illegitimate son of one of the brothers, the tale is presented in a nonlinear narrative with multiple flashbacks, as stories within stories begin to fill in the greater family chronicle spiraling around the twins and their simmering rivalry and hatred. The intricate secrets and lies at the heart of families are set against a backdrop of almost cinematic cityscapes and vistas. Ba and Moon present the naturalistic dynamism of Brazil in their art: sweeping, dramatic organic shapes against the sharp angularity of the people. The stark b&w art crackles to express the subtleties of palpable, barely contained tension between kin, a brutal police beating, and the erotic electricity of an exotic dance. Ba and Moon bring a cool, confident sharpness to their narrative to reflect the shades of gray in this powerful family saga."

Loving Cara

Description

Josh King is an expert at running his family's multi-million dollar ranch in Montana. (And all that outside manual labour has done wonders for sculpting his six-foot-three body, too.) But as sure footed as he is when it comes to the ranch, Josh doesn't know anything about how to deal with an adolescent boy-so when his twelve-year-old nephew, Seth, is dropped off on his doorstep, looking scared and acting surly as hell, Josh knows he needs help in straightening him out. Cara Donovan loves her quiet life as a teacher in her sleepy hometown, so she jumps at the chance to make a little money over the summer as a tutor. But when she learns she'll be teaching Josh King's nephew, Cara's sweet summer job gets a little bit hotter. Cara tries to focus all her attention on tutoring Seth, but Josh proves to be a delicious distraction, while Josh's memories of the shy girl he once teased in high school are nothing like the beautiful woman he's facing now. Can he persuade her that there's more between them than a summer fling?

The bloodiest day of the entire Western war fell on 22 August 1914, when the French lost 27,000 dead. Four days later, at Le Cateau the British fought an extraordinary action against the oncoming Germans, one of the last of its kind in history. In October, at terrible cost they held the allied line against massive German assaults in the first battle of Ypres. The author also describes the brutal struggles in Serbia, East Prussia and Galicia, where Loving Cara download book by Christmas the Germans, Austrians, Russians and Serbs had inflicted on each other three million casualties. This book offers answers to the huge and fascinating question 'what happened to Europe in 1914?', through Max Hastings's accustomed blend of top-down and bottom-up accounts from a multitude of statesmen and generals, peasants, housewives and private soldiers of seven nations. His narrative pricks myths and offers some striking and controversial judgements. For a host of readers gripped by the author's last international best-seller All Hell Let Loose, this will seem a worthy successor.

The Wisest One in the Room: How to Harness Psychology's Most Powerful Insights

Description

When people get together, there is often one stand-out individual who others turn to for answers. This person has the best advice on everything from raising children to running a business, and offers the most penetrating insights into world events. Their understanding of people, and why we act as we do, makes them the wisest one in the room. Psychologists Thomas Gilovich and Lee Ross reveal their discipline's greatest discoveries so we can all become wiser. From conflict resolution to overcoming social shyness, and from winning a tennis match to encouraging people to recycle, they demonstrate how even small changes in social context, feedback or presentation can achieve dramatic results. Replete with real-world examples, The Wisest One in the Room is a fascinating examination of human behaviour, revealing how we can become more adept at tackling the challenges, great and small, that we face every day.

In the past, studies of the history of bookbinding were mainly concerned with the exterior decoration. This book focuses attention primarily on the physical aspects of the binding and its construction principles. It is an expanded version of a series of lectures delivered by the author while Visiting Professor at the University of Amsterdam in 1987, supplemented with the results of ten years of intensive research in major libraries on the Continent, the United Kingdom and the USA. It surveys the evolution of binding structures from the introduction of the codex two thousand years ago to the close of the Middle Ages. Part I reviews the scanty physical evidence from the Mediterranean heritage, the early Coptic, Islamic and Ethiopian binding structures and their interrelation with those of the Byzantine realm. Part II is devoted to a detailed analysis of The Wisest One in the Room: How to Harness Psychology's Most Powerful Insights download epub Western binding techniques, distinguishing the carolingian, romanesque and gothic wooden-board bindings as the main typological entities; their structure and function is compared with those of contemporary limp bindings. The book is illustrated with over 200 drawings and photographs and contains a comprehensive bibliography.
